Fire v QAS

The Fire Seniors defeated the QAS in a hard fought encounter. The first goal for the Fire coming just before half time.

David Muta having an immediate impact in his first home game acted as provider to Blackman when he deceived the defence into believing he was going for the strike but delivered a short pass to Blackmans feet. Blackman took the strike only to hit the post. James Verdin acting as poacher pounced on the rebound to send it to the back of the net.

Shortly after the restart the Fire scored their second goal. A free kick from Tyson Holmes ended in a goal mouth scramble. A Fire player headed the ball towards goal only to have it deflect off the QAS keeper to the feet of Kane Frew. Frew took a hurried shot at goal missing with the ball going wide. The fast closing Greig Hensley found the ball at his feet and made no mistake in beating the QAS keeper and tapping the ball home.

The third goal came with around thirty five minutes left in the game. The established combination of Holmes and Blackman made it look easy when combining to beat the QAS defence. Blackman picked up a ball coming forward passing the ball off to Holmes prior to turning and running onto goal. Holmes with a perfectly timed through ball put the ball again at the advancing Backmans feet. Blackman struck the ball keeping it low comfortably beating the QAS keeper.

Several more scoring opportunities went begging for the Fire with some poor finishing keeping the count down.

The QAS to their credit also had several scoring opportunities which they were also simply unable to finish. The Fire struggled early on against the fast moving passing play of the young QAS squad. After the first 20 minutes the Fire was able to settle and much more effectively close down the QAS passing game.

The Fire has a bye next week before travelling to Cairns the following week. A training match will be held at Caloundra Football Club next Thursday evening. See our web site and facebook page for kick off times.
