This weekend the Fire 12’s and Fire 14’s Futsal teams competed in the Johnny Warren Champions Cup. Both teams put on an impressive display, progressing to the Grand Final in their respective brackets, with the Fire 14’s taking the championship.

The Johnny Warren Champions Cup is an annual tournament in which the best teams from clubs throughout Queensland are invited to play. This year, the tournament was held at the Gold Coast Coomera Sports Stadium.

The Fire 12’s dominated the tournament’s early stages with a 13-3 win over Red Roos on Saturday morning and a 6-2 win over Victory Futsal in the afternoon. They finished off the day with an impressive 16-0 win over Madness 2.0 in the evening.

The 12’s started off Sunday with a 9-3 win over North Coast NSW to progress to the finals. They progressed through the qualifying and semi-finals, picking up win over Just Futsal 6-0 and Pink Pandas 7-2. They were unable to finish off the weekend with the championship though, going down 1-6 to Pool 2 favourites Futsal Fury, earning themselves the title of runners up overall.

The Fire 12’s standing in the tournament ladder spoke volumes on their performance, totalling almost twice as many goals scored as the next highest team.

The Fire 14’s dismantled the competition in their tournament bracket, picking up a win against Shooting Stars 11-4 on Saturday morning. The afternoon brought some adversity to the squad with a 4-2 defeat by Hakuna Mata, followed by an astounding 30-0 victory over Just Futsal.

The 14’s started Sunday off with a 10-1 victory over Reds to move into the finals. They ended the day with two more wins against Gladiators and Hakuna Mata to claim the championship cup.

The title earned Fire Futsal 14’s and 12’s an invitation to attend The World Futsal Championships in July 2018 at ESPN Stadium in Orlando, Florida, USA.
