Lions FC (2) v Sunshine Coast FC (1)

Sunshine Coast Fire travelled to Lions FC chasing their first win of the season against the undefeated Lions FC. Fire have been agonizingly close to victory over the past two matches and were confident they could match the ladder leading Lions with their speed up front and flair through the mid field.

Fire looked to have good energy to start the match with all players busy in defence.

Within the 1st minute of play goal keeper Bradford Green was called upon twice and looked at ease repelling the Lions attack.

On the stroke of three minutes of play the Lions No. 7 took a booming shot from with the box which struck the cross bar with a thud and rolled away harmlessly.

It took until the 5th minute of play for Fire to get a touch of the ball outside of their own half and Ryan Tappouras sent a killer pass between two Lions defenders to release Kaiden Dawson on the first of two threatening runs down the left flank. The first resulted in a corner and the 2nd only 30 secs later found Mark Shaw unmarked on the back post and could well have ended up in a goal.

In the 11th Mintute Tappouras sent Shaw down the right flank on a promising attack only for the Lions huge No6 to snuff out the opportunity.

In the 20th minute Lachlan Noyes sent a towering free kick towards the box only for the No6 to head it away to safety.

In the 23rd minute Luke Vancam doggedly tracked the right wing all the way to the box and shut down a dangerous chance.

In the 34th Minute Herbie Allsopp put Dawson away down the left flank only for the defender to stifle the shot.

Fire finished the half on top however the scoreboard showed nil all.

In the 46th minute Dre’ Ngaha deflected a Fire corner with his right foot narrowly past the back post for a near miss.

In the 37th minute Ngaha put a perfectly weighted corner past the front post and over the goal line only for the ref to call no goal in a very close call.

In the 54th minute Dawson went on a run down the left wing and finished with a shot that was saved comfortably by the goal keeper.

On the 62nd minute a nice ball from Neo Anderson put Charlie Jeff away through the Lions back field only for the defence to block a pass from reaching a speeding Shaw who looked very dangerous.

In the 63rd minute Anderson was placed on report with a yellow card in an accidental strike to the face of his opponent.

After a strong showing at centre back Luke Vancam was moved to centre forward in a gamble for that elusive Fire Goal. It immediately paid dividends as he won the ball and deftly played it off to Dawson who struck a fine shot deep into the Lions net for a 1 all ball game.

In the 69th minute the Lions managed to Fire the ball into the box with the deflection finding the striker who managed to edge it past Green for a heart-breaking goal in the dying seconds. After being on top for such large periods of the game it was a tough way to finish for the Fire boys.
