Gareth Thomson Appointed Technical Director

Gareth Thomson Appointed Technical Director

Sunshine Coast FC are delighted to announce the return of Gareth Thomson as our Technical Director/Head of Football Operations.

A familiar face to many on the Coast, Gareth has an extensive background in Coach Development & Program Management in the UK, New Zealand and Australia. Gareth was previously employed as our Academy Director from 2018 to 2020 before joining Caboolture Sports FC as their Technical Director in 2021.

Now returning to the Fire, Gareth’s new role will involve building on our current Youth Development Plan (The Fire Way), leading our coaching/playing staff and the responsibility of day to day management of our club including the technical program for the Full Time program at Peregian Beach College.

Speaking on his appointment, Gareth was delighted to be returning home:

“I’m extremely proud to have the opportunity to spearhead the program and build on the fantastic work already done. With the growth of the Full Time Academy at the School, we are truly breaking ground with our approach to Youth Development in Australia.

I’m looking forward to being part of the Fire community again and I can’t wait to get on the grass and help all our players and coaches develop to their full potential. We will work as hard as we can to continue to drive the Fire as the leading player development pathway on the Coast.”

The appointment of Gareth is another landmark for the Fire with the club now boasting 9 full time members of staff to help support the Sunshine Coast Footballer.

As of the 1st of July, Gareth will begin his new role and our current Technical Director Melvyn Wilkes transitions into his new role as Sporting Director of our umbrella organisation Sunshine Coast Sporting Academy. Rest assured, Melvyn will still be on the grass and involved in supporting our young academy footballers long into the future.

Melvyn has been an incredible servant to the club over his 8 years as Technical Director and we looking forward to seeing the development of the sporting program under his leadership.

Speaking on the announcement, Melvyn said:

“Gareth has an understanding of how our club dynamics operate on a day to day basis, we worked closely together in bringing the Academy (SAP) up to what is now a Gold rated program, whilst we also worked together with the Implementation of the Full-Time Academy at Peregian Beach College”.

“Nearly all of our staff and parents/guardians know Gareth which made it a very easy and quick decision for us as a club, plus we feel the club is now in an amazing space working with our Football Queensland Club Ambassador to push our club to Gold Rated for 2023, which should see us playing in the top tier both in Academy and NPL”.

“Gareth has done an amazing job as Technical Director for Caboolture Sports FC which has helped him to evolve again, however, for his own personal progression and development, he has seen the rapid progress and growth we have continued to make both on and off the field and wants to be back where it all began to help continue that growth and drive forwards. We are delighted to have him back”.

Welcome back Gareth!
