Sunshine Coast Fire (2) v Peninsula Power (1)

The conditions were perfect for the game against Peninsula Power. Power took the lead with the opening goal in the early stages of the game. The Fire girls found their feet and attacked the power defence which resulted in a goal from Teyl Danger set up neatly by Anya Suffolk. Fire continued to push on through the first half creating chances but not being able to finish.

Fire showed some excellent formation and tactical skills which led up to the second goal for Fire. Abbey Hutton placed the ball into the bottom right corner after cutting through Power’s defensive line and taking advantage of the space. Fire continued to carry the possession in a defensive manner and refused to concede.

Sunshine Coast Fire (1) v Olympic FC (2)

Second place Fire were home to fourth place Olympic, however Olympic are unpredictable and have proved to be dangerous when they are up for the challenge.

The field conditions were quite poor and this caused chaos for the team with the ball skimming fast across the pitch.

The 2nd minute saw the ball rolled up the middle by the Fire GK to the defence, but with three opposition players ready to pounce, the ball was turned over and finished past the Fire keeper into goal. (0-1)

Olympic were pressing high and even though Fire was dominating the play, they found themselves getting into battles over the ball instead of completing fluid passes.

Harrison Bowen made good use of his body in shielding the ball and created some great opportunities when attacking and moving the ball forward.

Plenty of opportunities came the Fire’s way in the first half, but four out of the five shots at goal were skied over the crossbar.

An equaliser would be found in the 23rd minute, when the ball was played through for Daniel Cuttler to shoot. His strike was to the bottom left of goal and the ball deflected off the side post and into the net. (1-1)

For Fire to tip the game in their favour, they needed to be more organised and quicker with their reactions and decision-making.

Olympic were forcing the Fire to play the defensive game and within two minutes of the second half, Olympic was looking dangerous from a corner, but the ball was headed by Harrison Hooper and then cleaned up by GK Kurt Moore-Barnard.

Fire had their own series of corners, but again, the well-placed crosses could not find the mark.

Harrison Bowen and Harrison Hooper were working hard in defence and were instrumental in holding out an attacking Olympic team.

Fire proved to be more proactive in the second half and pass the ball through to the front third but were unable to finish into goal.

In the 46th minute, a ball was crossed in from the right wing and cleared off the goal line by Harrison Bowen, but the line referee determined that the ball had already crossed the line, so the goal was awarded to Olympic. (1-2)

A Yellow card was awarded to Olympic in the 51st minute for a hard tackle on Daniel Cuttler but Olympics’ keeper comfortably saved the free kick.

Tom Whittaker would receive a Yellow Card in the 55th minute, when he pushed Olympics’ keeper from behind and another Yellow card was given to Olympic in the 65th minute for pushing Mackenar Bradfield in the back.

Even though Fire dominated possession and created several chances over the next 10 minutes, another goal would remain out of the teams reach and the three points would go home with Olympic.

Sunshine Coast Fire (4) v Olympic FC (0)

A warm, sunny winters day at Western Fields saw Sunshine Coast play an Olympic side they had beaten convincingly in their two previous encounters.

The match got off to a good start for Fire, as they hit the lead thanks to some good play from centre back Taj Suffolk who played a delightful through ball past the Olympic defence which found Terone Wattegedara who controlled and placed past the Olympic keeper into the bottom corner.  Unfortunately Wattegedara picked up an injury at the same time forcing him from the field.

In the 5th minute Fire looked like they would double the lead as some good play from Mitchell Bridge through the centre released Tom Croft who laid the ball to Tyson Williams, but his shot drifted just wide.

Olympic crept back into the game and could have had an equaliser after some good play out wide saw the Olympic winger take a shot from distance, but keeper David Payne tipped the effort over the bar.

Some set pieces to Olympic provided them with some more chances but they failed to take their opportunities

Kurtis Modlin moved into the central role up forward and caused problems with some strong runs.  A first effort hit the post and then when provided with a second chance the Olympic defenders pulled him down in the box to give Fire a chance from a penalty.  Tom Croft made no mistake from the shot and Fire went into half time with a 2-0 lead.

The second half was a scrappy affair as Olympic pushed to get themselves back into the match, but some solid defending from Fire’s back four gave them few chances.

Olympic’s best chance came in the 63rd minute from a well worked free kick that saw the Olympic attacker with a free header which was put wide

Fire sealed the match in the 70th minute after a Kurtis Modlin pass found Tyson Williams, who created some space before shooting from 18 yards with a shot that bounced over the keepers flailing hands

A fourth followed soon after, with a brain fade from the Olympic keeper giving Fire another penalty after he kicked out at Kurtis Modlin.  Tom Croft stepped up and coolly slotted the ball home to give him his second for the day.

Sunshine Coast Fire (2) v Peninsula Power (1)

Going into the game, Fire were low on numbers with many players coming back from injury or playing through colds. A few of the Under 13 girls stepped up to make up the low numbers. Peninsula Power scored early in the game at the 10-minute mark. The goal largely came from confusion in the middle on defence, and not covering marks. However, Fire were able to sort out their formation and come back strong.

Only three minutes later Fire scored. Jane Uebergang played an excellent through ball to Fire’s left-outside forward Alex Cannon who crossed the ball across the face of the goal. The goal was an own-goal by Peninsula Power, but Jazmyn Rogers was ready on the back post for a shot. Going into half-time the game was tied 1-1.

Twenty-five minutes into the second half Fire scored again with Jane Uebergang scoring. Fire outplayed Peninsula for much of the game, executing passing combinations and runs off the ball expected to be seen from older, more mature teams. The Fire girls showed a much improved form compared to the beginning of the season.

Sunshine Coast Fire (3) v Olympic FC (3)

The keen rivalry between these two teams was to be tested again today as Fire were looking to avenge their first round away loss to Olympic 3-1.

Consequently it was a frantic first five minutes as both teams tried to establish their early superiority on the game.

Abe Reeves had to fill in at Fire central defence for Sean Culpitt, unavailable due to sickness, and Matt Cann dropped back from attack for Abe on the right. Reeves and James Beckman were tested early by Olympic playing through the middle.

Olympic were employing an energetic press to put Fire under pressure and not allow Fire to establish any rhythm. It was a very competitive and physical contest and not a game where the midfield could create as they were quickly shut down. Both teams were guilty of playing long balls from the back.

Olympic were given an unexpected advantage in the 18th minute when they were awarded a dubious penalty as the ball was driven hard at close range into Liam Burns who had little time to react. The ball appeared to strike Liam high on the arm toward the shoulder but the referee immediately pointed to the spot.  Olympic converted to make it 1-0.

Olympic understandably lifted after the soft penalty and Fire had to fight hard to stay in the game.

It was a fairly non-descript first half with few highlights but Fire were back in the contest in the 34th minute when a Callum Jones free kick from wide on the left fell into traffic deep in the Olympic box and Addi Brader was first to react and scramble the ball into the net at the far post to make it 1-1.

Fire had little time to build on their equaliser when after another three minutes the ball was played through the Fire defence and frantic appeals for offside were ignored by the officials as the Olympic attacker slotted home to make it 2-1.

After half time Fire came out positively, looking for ways to break open the Olympic defence.

Olympic were again very physical, testing both Fire and the referee. Olympic ended up with three yellow cards.

Fire were building pressure and the best chance for the Fire fell to Kobe Fuller in the 53rd minute but his shot could not beat the Olympic keeper.

Aiden Ward was troubling the Olympic defence with his penetrating runs down the left. He was finally rewarded in the 60th minute when he earned a penalty as he was taken down from behind as he drove passed the defender into the box. Kobe Fuller stepped up and drilled the ball into the net to make it make it 2-2.

Fire were getting in behind the Olympic defence more often and Aiden Ward continued to cause Olympic trouble on the left.

Olympic were threatening however and in the 66th minute Josh Wall made himself big in a 1v1 with the Olympic attacker. Josh got a hand to the shot and deflected it onto the post but not to safety as the loose ball bounced away to the right. Another Olympic attacker closed in on the loose bouncing ball near the goal line but he had no angle to shoot and pushed it back inside to a teammate whose shot went agonisingly wide of the left post for a goal kick.

Fire were building again as they were looking for a winner. In the 73rd minute Callum Jones crossed to Aiden Ward who put a square ball back to Jack Bowen who worked to get a clear shot on goal but only managed to blast it wide.

A minute later from a corner Callum Jones delivered the ball into the box and Jack Bowen rose to meet the ball with a power header into the net. 3-2 and Fire were in front for the first time in the game.

Again, Fire had little time to consolidate after scoring and true to the frantic nature of this game after only holding the lead for a minute, in the 75th minute, the hard working Fire defence allowed an unmarked Olympic striker to bring down a cross onto his chest and volley the dropping ball into the net to make it 3-3.

As disappointing as it was for Fire to concede the third goal they finished the stronger of the two teams and had a final chance in the 80th minute but could not convert from the corner.

In a tough, competitive match neither team deserved to lose and it sets up an interesting third and final game of the season against Olympic next week in a catch up round.

SWQ Thunder (3) v Sunshine Coast Fire (5)

This game was always going to be a physical battle, last time these two teams squared off, SWQ Thunder came away with a win on the Sunshine Coast so it was Fire’s chance to level the score.

With only the bare 11 travelling to Toowoomba and knowing it was going to be a very physical game Fire put in a huge effort to get 3 points with one of their better first halves of the year. Rhyan Scriggins scored 4 goals in the first 45 min to back up his 4 goals in the 2nd half of last week, which now puts him at top goal scorer for the Under 18 boys compeition on 20. The boys started well on what was a very average surface to play football on. Fire went to the break with a 4-1 lead, with everybody playing well, the half time break was about the boys not letting them back in the game.

The second half started well with some good possession and link up play in the front third. Jordy Irwin scored Fire’s 4th goal. As the game progressed Fire ran out of legs, conceding 2 late goals.

Player of the Match: Rhyan Scriggins

Youth Women

Sunshine Coast Fire (1) v Peninsula Power (2)

Fire dominated possession in the early part of the game but were unable to capitalise on the opportunities created.

Kirsty Clifford scored the first goal of the match in the 22nd minute after the ball was won at left back, passed up through to midfield and played through where Kirsty showed her usual fantastic pace and determination to beat the defenders and the goal keeper to score.

Power replied in the 43rd minute from outside the penalty area with a high ball over the Fire keeper and their second goal was scored one minute into the second half when a ball was curled in from the goal line at the edge of the penalty area.

Players of the Match: Keira Burgess and Dani Collins
