Junior Match Reports – 23 & 24 April 2016

Under 13 Girls – SWQ Thunder (3) v Sunshine Coast FC (9)

Within one minute of kick off the Fire girls almost opened the game up with a missed opportunity. SWQ quickly cleared the ball from their defensive line but the ball was quickly played back down the line into the attacking third for Fire. The ball was kicked out of play by the SWQ defence.

Jordyn Weckert quickly took the throw in finding Courtney Brunner’s feet, Courtney then passed the ball back to Jordyn who then attempted to cross the ball but instead found the net from a far distance. Fire leading 1-0. SWQ had their kick off and attempted to play quickly through the centre of the field but Sommer Jordan saw Emily Roach long on the attack and played a lofted through ball straight to Emily’s feet. Emily drove into the box using her speed against the defender and powerfully smashed the ball past SWQ’s goalkeeper. Fire lead 2-0.

SWQ responded quickly and easily caught Fire defence off-guard. They were able to place the ball past Fire goalkeeper Charlotte Lutz. The score now being 2-1 in Fire’s favour. Fire quickly restarted the game and kept pushing for chances. The chances kept coming for Fire but all attempts are either off target or easy for the keeper to hang on to. SWQ keeper attempted to play the ball out, miskicked the ball and gave Courtney Brunner an easy open goal finish. Score now being 3-1.

SWQ played and excellent passing combination through the thirds, easily holding off Fire and keeping possession easily, they were able to cross the ball into the box and find the net. The whistle blew and the score being 3-2.

As the second half kicked off, Fire immediately started to dominate the game and used the opne wide areas of the field to create play and chances. Drew Aiken played a huge part in sending the ball into the attacking areas, she played the ball into the feet of Jordyn Weckert who then crossed the ball into Audrey Upston. Audrey attempted to score but was denied by the keeper. Jordyn raced into the box and was able to find the net from the rebound. Fire winning 4-2.

Jordyn Weckert yet again found the ball at her feet from Drew and she attempted a long range shot which was only just pushed away by the keeper. Audrey Upston positioned herself well and was able to place the ball in the bottom corner from the rebound. Fire 5-2 up. SWQ were finding it hard to hold off Fire as we intercepted every pass and quickly played the ball forwards. Emily Roach used the wide area to run into space with the ball and pick out Audrey Upston unmarked, Emily crossed the ball to Audrey who then had a one on one with the keeper and smashed the ball into the net. Fire now 6-2 up.

Mikayla Wrigley quickly picked up on an SWQ error and found Courtney Brunner in space. Courtney had a one on one with the keeper and was able to score easily. Score line now being 7-2. SWQ turned quickly from kick off and sent the ball long into the feet of Sommer Jordan, Sommer cleared the ball away from our goal area and Jordyn Weckert was able to run onto the ball from the right side of the field and put the ball into the top left corner of the net. Fire winning 8-2.

With 10 mins to go Drew Aiken tackled Thunder’s wide player and ran down the line using skill and speed to beat defenders, Drew then made an exceptional cross to Courtney’s feet allowing Courtney to score with her first touch. Fire winning 9-2. It was the last few minutes of the game where SWQ found themselves with a free kick on the edge of the box due to a foul by Fire defence. As the ball was crossed, the wind pushed the ball towards the goal making it easy for SWQ’s attacker to get her foot onto the ball and kick it into the goal. The final whistle blew and the full time score saw Fire 9-3 up with now 5 consecutive wins.
