Sunshine Coast Fire were the eventual winners of the 2012 QSL Grand Final. The match was a tense and entertaining game – one which saw the Whitsunday Miners net first. The teams went to the half time break with 0:1 showing on the scoreboard. Shaun Blackman, playing in his final game for the Fire, scored on the hour mark to tied up the match. Tyson Holmes put the Fire ahead at 83 mins, only to see the Miners equalise just three minutes later. The full-time whistle saw the match tied …. and so to extra time. During the first phase of extra time, a Miner’s player was red carded for a dangerous tackle on Sam Knight. Despite the one-man advantage, the Fire were unable to break the deadlock. The penalty shootout followed ….. with Holmes, Stinson, Barlow, Aherne-Evans, Henslee all converting, with the 4th from the Miners sailing high over Antony Halls head. Fire win on penalties – 5:4 ! Congratulations to all the players, coaching, support staff and volunteers.
A BIG thank you to all the spectators who came along to support the team – as there was over 1,000 of you, you certainly helped get the boys over the line!
