Under 13 Girls – Sunshine Coast FC (2) v Souths United FC (1)

The girls took to the field for the first time in over four weeks due to holidays and designated byes. The challenge before them was the clash with top of the table South United.

From the initial whistle, it was plain for all to see that the girls were slightly rusty from the long break. However, what the girls lacked in initial sharpness they more than made up for with pure grit and determination. The back line, whilst under pressure remained steady and were supported by a spirited midfield. Whilst the Fire strikers had few opportunities, as the half went on the passes starting to come together. An unfortunate own goal half way through the first half ensured Souths went to the break with a one goal advantage.

The girls immediately took the initiative and began to attack the South goal. A rasping shot from Midfielder Drew Aiken caught a deflection and finished in the back of the Souths net. The goal was the tonic the girls needed and they continued to play excellent football. A number of long range free kicks ensured Vicky Holowko was adjusting her range finder. Her third free kick was a beautifully taken curling shot from 25 yards that sailed into the top corner of the net. From that point on the girls maintained a beautiful shape and the Fire discipline had returned. At the final whistle the girls were full of running and thoroughly deserved the applause from a very appreciative crowd of parents, relatives and friends.

Under 14 Boys – Sunshine Coast FC (1) v Gold Coast City FC (1)

Top of the table clash. Fire currently undefeated after 7 games and have only conceded one goal so far.

First 30sec, Fire kicked off and played the ball backwards several times. Ball played to centre backs where GC #9 intercepted and placed the ball past the Fire keeper 1v1.

Fire looked slow at beginning of game and GC were up for the top of the table clash. Next 10 mins saw Gold Coast apply more pressure and hold the ball for longer periods than Fire. Gradually Fire started to play their natural game and move the ball quickly.

Jayden Emery was beginning to influence the game. Great shot from distance saw the GC keeper deflect the ball wide. Emery shot from distance only to see the ball deflected off a GC defender. From the corner kick Jake Debbage curled the ball into the near post only for the GC keeper to pull off a fine save down low to his left.

The introduction of Nick Harvey and Jacob Lombardo started to create opportunities down the left hand side of the field. Harvey pestered his opposite number with some determined running and threatening balls into the box.

Fire finished the half the stronger side and created many opportunities. Gold Coast attackers were given very few opportunities as Todd Camm and Bailey Halls-Tempest produced another fine performance.

Fire started the better of the two sides with Emery and Conner Hyder maintaining control over the Gold Coast midfield. Emery drove down the left wing beating several players in a great driving run, unfortunately his cross was intercepted desperately by a Gold Coast defender.

Hyder continually found pockets of space using his pace and suburb ball mastery to constantly turn the GC defensive line.

Lucas Aughertson was causing havoc with his pace and anticipation as Fire controlled the game in search of an equaliser.

In the 58th minute and great driving run from Hyder resulted in a free kick outside the 18 yard box. Aughterson drove the ball high into the GC net giving their keeper little chance. A fine effort given the strong head wind.

Fire finished the game the better team as they searched for the winner. In the dying moments a great run and through ball from Jack Williams found Aughterson in a position to win the game, however some heavy handed defending did enough to put him off balance and allow the keeper to save.
