Brisbane City FC (5) v Sunshine Coast FC (3)

The game started well for Sunshine Coast with field possession and the majority of ball possession being dominated by the Fire. Several chances on goal were unsuccessful and as is often the case, a goal against the run of play came in the 5th minute as City broke down their right wing. Fire continued with its strong start as Jake Debbage and Jayden Emery both created opportunities. Debbage worked tirelessly down the right wing, constantly beating his marker and getting behind the City defence.  Emery was back to his old tricks as he moved between the City defensive lines constantly winning any loose ball and turning any opportunities into Fire attacks.  A couple of team defensive lapses found Fire 4-0 down at half time, however the score could have been closer had the Fire taken all of their chances.

The defensive line kept their shape and led by the very impressive Todd Camm moved across the field as a solid unit. Liam MacMillian was faced the daunting task of keeping the very strong and fast City winger under control. Liam not only stopped their winger, he turned several City opportunities into Fire attacks as he combined beautifully with Aaron Smith on the left.

It wasn’t long before one of these attacks down the left turned into a goal as Smith beautifully squared a pass to Patterson who placed the ball into the far corner. At 4-1 Fire lifted again. A perfectly taken corner from Aryon Ramos found Jacob Lombardo on the penalty spot unmarked. Lombardo volleyed the ball with the inside of his foot giving the City keeper no chance. The final goal for Fire was a real team effort.

Olympic FC (1) v Sunshine Coast FC (1)

Fire began well, dominating possession and 5 minutes in Jack Beardsley found the net from broken play following an Alistair McMillian cross, but with a late call of offside the goal was disallowed. Another opportunity in the 12th min from an Olympic foul saw Arnison take a shot from a free kick but the keeper made the save. Olympic made the occasional breakthrough, however the Fire backline of Ezekiel Hawkins, Brodie Boyce, Corey Gibbs and Sam Fleming were up to the task every time. In the midfield, Arnison, Luke Poulton and Ewan Gordon dominated possession, but could not find the forward line with the same amount of space as the previous week. At 22 minutes Olympic ventured forward and were disposed of with ease, however a poorly weighted pass resulted in the ball being gifted to an Olympic player who slotted home for a 1-0 lead. Resuming from the drinks break, Fire got their chance with a foul inside the box. Arnison made no mistake 1-1. At 30 minutes Olympic had a free kick within range but it was well taken by keeper Josh Croft. H/T 1-1

Fire started the 2nd half strong and on 50 minutes Alistair Mcmillian sent in an excellent left cross which the Olympic keeper read well, coming off the line to make the save. At 55 minutes Luke Varga was unlucky with a shot that was just pushed wide.

At 58 minutes Jackson Haynes very nearly pulled off a clever deflection from an Arnison shot which the keeper deflected away for a corner. At 65 minutes, Fire were unfortunate when an alert Olympic player noticed Croft a little bit out of position, took a quick shot that beat the keeper and with everyone frozen and expecting the ball to go over the goal line, watched as it hit the post. At 68 mins Olympic were once again unlucky when the ball hit the crossbar. Fulltime1-1.

Gold Coast City FC (1) v Sunshine Coast FC (6)

Sunshine Coast Fire U15’s produced their best performance of the season as they convincingly beat Gold Coast 6-1 on a warm Sunday afternoon at Perry Park.

Keen to impress the watching Queensland selectors, Fire started brightly but were hit on the counter by an early Gold Coast break.  A dangerous ball into the box was initially saved bravely by Eligh Williams, but the rebound was put away and Gold Coast took the lead.

A quick reply saw Kaelan Debbage find Tom Whittaker with a great cross, and the in-form striker duly headed the ball into the net to equalise.

Fire were producing some neat combinations, with Sean Bentley linking well with Whittaker, while fullbacks Keegan New and Harry Bowen were also getting forward and combining with wingers Kaelan Debbage and Bud Baublys to create plenty of chances.

Harry Fletcher had two great chances to score after strong forward runs from defence, but both efforts were just wayward, while Tom Whittaker twice went close with free kicks as Fire peppered the opposition goal but, unfortunately the finish just wouldn’t come in a first half that we dominated.

The second half saw more Fire dominance as we went looking for the lead.  The midfield were in control as Nathan Thompson, Jordan Meredith, Beau Boucher and Sean Bentley all had the upper hand on their opponent.

The post was hit a number of times as we searched for the all-important goal and a goal finally came as Tom Whittaker found Kaelan Debbage, who jinked past a couple of opponents before finding the net.

A minute later the dominance began to tell, as Tom Whittaker was bought down in the box after out pacing his opponent and Bud Baublys made no mistake with the penalty to make it 3-1.

Lachlan Tolpitt and Harry Fletcher were making some great runs from the centre of defence that really opened up the opposition; both players drove forward well and created plenty of good opportunities.

On 66 minutes a short corner provided the fourth Fire goal as Debbage and Baublys combined and once again Debbage found Whittaker with a cross that was well finished.

Harry Fletcher provided the fifth goal with a fantastic pass over the top of the Gold Coast defence that Whittaker rifled into the net to grab his hat trick.

Whittaker turned provider for the sixth goal as his cross was volleyed home by Kaelan Debbage as Fire ran riot.

The final result ended 6-1, but more pleasing than the score line was the performance itself. Plenty of enjoyable to watch combinations and team play that consistently opened up the opposition defence.

Player of the Match: Lachlan Tolpitt

Fire had the better of the early exchanges but a bouncing ball in the Fire defence brought an anxious moment as the Olympic attacker raced through and Josh Wall was drawn off his line to make a 1v1 save at the feet of the attacker.

Fire could have opened the scoring in the 6th minute when Jez Lofthouse turned an Olympic defender and crossed to Kye Yamaoka-Chapman whose shot forced the Olympic keeper to save low to his right.

Fire could not convert a second and third corner after attacking raids and a found themselves surprisingly down 1-0 in the 12th min. Olympic’s Joe Lin pounced on a loose ball midway between the penalty box and half way and seeing Wall off his line was able to float a ball toward the back- peddling Wall. As the ball passed overhead despite Wall getting a hand to it he was unable to prevent the ball bouncing into the goal.

Fire continued to attack which drew a number of fouls by Olympic to prevent Fire progressing to goal scoring opportunities. One attack should have ended in a penalty for Fire in the 22nd min when Taj Suffolk put Kobe Fuller through into the box and Fuller was taken down. The referee waved play on as Terone Wattegedara from Fire received the loose ball but his shot went wide. The referee then went over and booked the Olympic defender for the challenge but ruled a goal kick for Olympic.

Finally in the 27th min the Fire found the equaliser they had been working hard for. Despite close attention from several Olympic defenders Fuller was able to turn and shoot. His blocked shot rebounded to Suffolk to the right outside of the penalty box. Suffolk put a lovely curling ball into the box and Wattegedara volleyed into the bottom right hand side of the goal.

Olympic had used wide diagonal balls in behind the Fire defence and were pressing high, but when Fire held possession and moved the ball quickly they looked the more dangerous.

Fire’s defence marshalled by captain James Beckman and the hard working Liam Burns in the middle and Bailey Wearn on the left and Taj Suffolk on the right was able to deal with any threat Olympic could throw forward in the first half. Despite having created more chances than Olympic the Fire only had the one goal to show for their efforts when the teams went to the break 1-1.

Immediately from the kick off for the second half Fire went on the attack and caught Olympic napping.  Lofthouse received the ball and played it forward in behind the Olympic defence for the advancing Fuller. Fuller had time to settle and pick his spot as he lobbed the stranded Olympic keeper to make it 2-1 to the Fire.

Ten minutes later Fire had increased the lead to 3-1 when Yamaoka-Chapman pushed a ball to Lofthouse who flicked it on for Fuller to find the net with a low shot.

Fire looked well in control at this point and could have increased their lead. In the 62nd min, however, another Olympic diagonal ball in behind stretched the Fire defence and a ball crossed in fortuitously for Olympic accidently struck James Beckman on the arm. The referee had no hesitation in awarding a penalty despite the Fire’s protests, and Olympic’s Jack Stankov converted to make it 3-2.

The long diagonal balls continued to pay dividends for Olympic four minutes later, when Jacob Seeto found the net at the near post when he latched onto a cross from the right. At 3-3 Fire were stunned as they had let a two goal lead slip and Olympic had been inspired by their comeback.

Fire rallied and created enough chances to get the winner without success. Chances came to Yamaoka-Chapman whose strong header went over the bar from a corner; Fuller drilled one long range shot agonisingly just wide; Yamaoka-Chapman was through on the keeper but his chip went wide and Ollie Blackmore saw his long range goal-bound effort saved by the Olympic keeper.

In the 81st minute a cruel twist to the game saw Fire unable to clear the danger from the top of their box and Olympic’s Deng Neyal turn and shoot through a number of defenders to score. At 4-3 Olympic’s comeback had them on the verge of running out unlikely winners.

Fire showed character and continued to attack. Liam Burns showed pure determination to win a ball in a strong tackle on the right and recovered his feet to put a good ball into the box only to see the chance go unrewarded. Fire had to wait until the 90th minute when Jack Stevenson put Fuller into space behind the Olympic defence. Fuller dribbled around the keeper to find the net to complete his hatrick and level the game at 4-4.

Player of the Match: Kobe Fuller
