Nike Manchester United Premier Cup

As a direct result of Sunshine Coast FC’s sponsorship arrangement with Nike, the club has been successful in being granted the right to host the prestigious under 15 boys Manchester United Nike Premier Cup (Queensland Tournament). This worldwide tournament has grown in stature since its inception some 13 years ago. Twenty finalist teams from around the world are grouped and played off in a round robin series.

The successful team from the Queensland Tournament will be flown to Melbourne all expenses paid by Nike to participate in the Australian final. The winning team of the Australian Finals and the New Zealand finals will play a one off game the “Pacific Final” for the right to represent the Pacific world finals in August. The Pacific Final will be played on the weekend of 2-3 or 9-10 May and the venue will be in the Australian Team winners home state.

The winner of this Final is then flown to either the UK or Asia to play off against the best teams in the world for the ultimate glory of world champion. Nike again funds the full costs of the Australian/New Zealand champion.

Managing Director of Sunshine Coast FC, Mr Noel Woodall said he was delighted with the decision by Nike and Football Queensland to entrust the tournament to Sunshine Coast FC. He also said the decision by Sunshine Coast FC to seek the Tournament was consistent with the Clubs commitment to the nurturing and development of young footballers. The tournament will be held at Stockland Park on 21st March 2009.

Final – Loganholme FC v Souths United

The Final of the Nike Manchester United Premier Cup – 2009 Qld Tournament was held on Saturday 21st March at Stockland Park, Kawana.   On a day which saw the cancellation of most sporting events on the Sunshine Coast, the Tournament went ahead despite challenging weather and field conditions. The contrast between the beginning of the day, with heavy downpours and wet pitches, to the blue skies and bright sunshine during the Final couldn’t have been much starker.

The teams that made the final had both progressed from their pool rounds undefeated. Both teams play in the Brisbane Football Zone and are from the southern side of the city. Loganholme FC is located within the Logan City Council, at Loganholme itself. Souths United Soccer Club is a Brisbane based club, with its fields located at Runcorn.
In a tough and physical final, the match saw end-to-end with some great touches and lovely skills on display. With the intensity increasing, both keepers were called on to make heart-stopping saves. However, the only goals scored in normal time were the result of penalties, both in the second half. Loganholme were first on the scoreboard when a Souths defender was judged to have handballed in the box. The resultant dot-shot found the back of the net. Souths equalised from a free kick awarded well outside the box. The ball was curved around the wall and blasted into the back of the net.
The scores remained locked after extra time, so it came down to penalties. Souths United keeper saved the fifth of Loganholme’s penalties, thereby becoming his team’s hero. They will now travel to Victoria as Queensland’s representative in the Australian Nike Manchester United Premier Cup. Goodluck Souths United.
