Fire players compete in Girls' National Championships

Nine Fire players competed against the best footballers from across Australia at the Girls’ National Youth Championships in Coffs Harbour.

The tournament, set over five match days from Monday, 7th July to Friday 11th July, pitted the Queensland State representatives against squads from New South Wales, ACT, South Australia, Victoria, Western Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory.

Fire players Jazlyn Salih, Aimee Scott, Melissa Taft, Hannah Taylor and Meisha Westland were part of the U13 Girls State Team, while Michelle le Roux, Kirsty Clifford, Aqua Meanie and Lisa van Hooijdonk were part of the U15 Girls State Team.

The girls worked hard over the last couple of months to prepare for the tournament, travelling to Brisbane for training each week.

Fire Technical Director Kevin Evans said the Championships were an opportunity for the players to compete at the highest level, gain experience and showcase their talent at national level.
“It has been a great experience for the girls,” he said.

“There were some areas identified for Queensland to work on, however we have had excellent reports about our Fire girls and it bodes well for the future of football on the Sunshine Coast that so many of our Fire girls were selected into the team.

“I’d particularly like to congratulate Aimee Scott who did a great job as joint-captain of the Under 13 Girls State team, and Lissa Taft who was named player of the Match against South Australia.”
