Under 13 Girls – Sunshine Coast FC (5) v Eastern Suburbs FC (1)

Morning kick off temperatures above 32 degrees and touching 96% humidity ensured the drinks breaks scheduled for each half were very much appreciated by all. The girls had made an excellent start to the season and it was important that they continued the excellent form they had displayed in the preseason and game-1 of the main season. It was immediately apparent that once again the girls were on point and they settled into their familiar pattern of working hard for each other and doing the little things that great team players do.

A new layout of 4-3-3 saw the Fire take the field with a solid back four of Annabelle Campbell at right back, Vicky Holowko and Ellie Hambly as centre backs and Sophie Ryan as left back. The girls were extremely solid and worked together throughout the entire game to ensure goal keeper Dimity Bucciarelli had little to do. However, when called upon, Dimity was confident and assured in her actions. After a week spent on camp touring Canberra, Annabelle Campbell was her usual dependable self and never put a foot wrong. Sophie Ryan looked like she had been playing with the girls forever and never missed a beat.

The midfield three of Drew Aiken, Maddy Sansby and Emily Ferroussat got through a power of work. The warm conditions ensured the girls had to work for each other as they pushed forward to support attacks and then drop quickly to support the back four. Their vision and quick thinking ensured the transition from defence to attack was smooth and fast and gave the forwards plenty of goal scoring opportunities.

The front three of Tamika Banks, Lilly Herron and Grace Shelley (and super-sub Tahlia) were constantly moving to provide options for the rest of the team. Both sides of the front line were firing and all displayed excellent skills and speed throughout the game.

In the 10th Minute Drew Aiken adjusted the shooting sights after intercepting an Eastern Suburbs goal kick. A wonderful strike with her right foot saw the ball bend into the top right hand corner of the goal.

After some wonderful build up play down the left hand side of the field by Sophie Ryan and Tahlia, the ball was crossed into the path of Maddy Sansby who struck the ball into the corner of the goal.

In the 40th minute Emily Ferroussat fought for the ball on the left side, sending it wide to Tahlia. A beautiful through ball saw Lilly Herron use her amazing speed to get to the goal. Slowing slightly to settle herself, Lilly struck the ball past the keeper with real venom.

Another energy charged performance from Tamika working hard down the right hand side of the field. The recipient of a slide rule pass from central defender Vicky Holowko saw Tamika turn of the afterburners, steady herself as she approached the keeper and smashing it into the back of the net.

Five minutes later Tamika was at it again after being released by Sophie Ryan. Much like the previous goal, Tamika used her amazing speed to push clear of the defenders to once again strike the ball past the keeper.

A late goal by Eastern Suburbs saw a great move down the right hand side of the field. A lovely cross was met by a solid shot by the Eastern Suburbs striker and left the Fire keeper with no hope.

The final score of 5-1 to the Fire was flattering for Eastern Suburbs. The busiest player on the field by far was the Eastern Suburbs keeper who made some amazing saves. Well done to all girls and especially our new recruits of Sophie and Tahlia. It was also great to see Dimity back between the posts after a school cooking mishap where she received serious burns to her hands. All round another great display by all girls and a well-deserved win.

Eastern Suburbs kept up the attacked and scored shortly after.  With Fire gaining possession both Emily Roach and Teyl Danger took opportunities at the goal with shots flying straight over the goals posts both times. A free kick saw another missed opportunity by Kijah Stephenson. Eastern Suburbs took hold again with strong attack and scored another goal to bring the score to 2 nil. Four minutes before half time Meg Mason in defence position was bringing the ball back to her keeper, with eastern suburb players on her heels she tried to avoid colliding with Murphy Sheaf (our Goaly). Meg came down hard and injured her shoulder. She was taken from the field, and both teams looked forward to the break at half time.

Some encouraging words from Abbi and Melvyn at half time saw the team come back out with renewed enthusiasm. Only two minutes into the second half Audrey Upston scored a beautiful goal from a  centre position to bring the score up to 2 -1. Bree Wallace followed with an amazing goal from the right corner three minutes later – the score now even. The fire girls scored another three goals in the next 15 minute; goal scorers were (Emily Roach, Kijah Stephenson and Bree Wallace again).  The back line for Fire were determined to keep Eastern Suburbs out of their half, with Sommer, Jordyn and Destiny Guteridge putting in a great effort. With the score 5–2, Kaitlyn Ryan took the opportunity to shoot from 25 metres out but the goal keeper saw it coming and took a great save.  Great communication and team work in the second half ensured the U15s had a great win.
