Under 13 Boys

Sunshine Coast FC (4) v Redlands United FC (2)

Following an improved performance against Strikers last week the Fire Under 13 Boys were out to reverse their pre-season result against Redlands. A spritely start headed by the ‘speed machines’ Aryon Ramos and Jake Debbage saw the Fire team create some early chances. Both players were very direct, always looking to beat their opponent and are constantly turning the opposition defence.

Debbage had several early shots and looked like it wouldn’t be too long before he scored. However, Redlands scored first via a fine shot that Hugh Williams could do little about. The introduction of Patterson and Ellenberger changed the game again. Ellenberger created plenty of opportunities down the right as he constantly exploited any open space and provided quality service into the box. Several near misses on goal saw the Fire team go to the first break still 1-0 down.

Fire started the second half full of confidence and early pressure, forcing an attacking corner. A perfectly placed cross saw a defensive header drop to Gaske just inside the 18 yard box. With excellent technique, Gaske volleyed the ball with power and the goal bound shot was then deflected into the net.

Redlands tried to turn the momentum back in their favour, however a couple of fine saves from Williams kept Fire on the front foot. He has worked very hard on his ball distribution and this week saw a near faultless display. Debbage and Gaske both continued to torment the Redlands defence. Debbage unleashed several fierce shots towards goal seeing the keeper deflect one and the other go just over. With 20 minutes to go, Patterson turned his player and slipped a fine ball to Smith who played the perfect pass into the box. In desperation, the Redlands player was forced to play at the ball which ended up in their net.

The 2-1 lead saw the Fire team lift again. Debbage showed the Redlands team his class by collecting the ball in his own half and drive through the centre of the field beating several players with his pace and skill before finding himself 1v1 with the keeper. Jake calmly placed the ball into the bottom corner to make it 3-1.

With confidence high, Fire continued to push for more goals. The woodwork was hit several times as they pushed for their 4th goal. With 10 minutes to go, a free kick was awarded 35 out. Fire’s free kick specialist Patrick Simpson showed his class by placing the ball into the top corner. Redlands scored a goal towards the end, however a very well earned win for a much improved side.

Player of the Match: Matt Gaske. Matt played a great game showing some excellent touches on the ball and he looked great in attack.

Both teams had already played each other in preseason coming into this game and SCFC won that one comfortably. The boys were looking to have another good performance against Redlands.

Redlands quickly gained possession in the first minute and took a shot at Fire’s goal from a header which hit the post. Fire quickly regained their composure and a cross from Taj Suffolk to Aaron Robertson looked promising but Redlands’ goal keeper just beat him to the ball. In the 16th minute, a break up the left wing by Robertson put it through to Dylan Brownet, who took the ball on his stride and drove it past the keeper for the opening goal.

It was mostly Redlands attacking and pressing Fire in their half until Fire started to take control of the game midway through the first half, keeping more possession and giving it back to Redlands.

Bailey Waern countered an attack from Redlands, passing it through to Suffolk on the right with a cross to Terone Wattegedara who placed it into the back of the net.

Waern made a break down the middle and put a great ball through to Wattegedara who took on defenders and the keeper. Wattegedara shot and slotted it into the goals to make it 2-0 before half-time.

In the second half Brownet made a great cross to Suffolk, who gets on the end of it heads it but is denied by the cross bar. Fire started to control the second half in the 53rd minute with more possession and attacking game. Mitch Bridge crossed the ball into the box from a free kick, which is shot over the bar by Wattegedara in the 57th minute. Suffolk used his pace to beat the Redlands defender on his right and cross to the back post where Jared Schulz made a well-timed run to meet the ball and tap it in the net.

Redlands made an attacking play down the left in the 76th minute, facing Fire GK Nathan Foster one on one, but Foster denied Redlands with a fantastic block save to keep a clean sheet. Foster responds with a counter, clearing the ball long to Suffolk on the right wing, who cut in and beat his defender shoots down low into the corner netting for a 5-0 win for Fire.
