The Fire Under 15 Boys had a shaky game last Sunday against Palm Beach.
Assistant Coach, John Whiting, said that after their great performance in the Manchester United Cup the previous week, where the Fire narrowly lost in the final, they were lucky to scrape a 0-1 win over their Gold Coast counterparts.
The Fire had their first chance at goal 10 minutes into the game. Alex Van Kampen had a near-post effort, and 5 minutes later Sean Pateman made a great run down the line. He took on four players before crossing the ball into a Fire-less box.
The first-half finished with the score at 0-0.The Fire boys were finding it difficult to play their usual pro-active, possession-based football with a handful of players unavailable.
The majority of the second-half was similar to the first. However, in the 60th minute, the Fire managed to score the winning goal. Van Kampen passed to Sean de Chastel who headed the ball into the bottom corner of the net .
There were few further opportunities in the rest of the game, apart from a free kick from Van Kampen which was put wide.
The Palm Beach players would be disappointed with the 0-1 result, but as their coach said, the Fire ‘had the heart and just never gave up’.
