Under 13 Girls – Sunshine Coast FC (5) v The Gap (1)

The girls took their Pre-season form into the first round maintaining their winning streak beating The Gap 6-1. A masterful piece of coaching from Abbi Wilkes and Tom Greig ensured the 11 girls (two injured players unable to play) were sent out with a game plan to play wide and stretch the opposition. Another special mention must also go to the stand-in keeper Lilly Danger who looked right at home between the sticks.

Two goals each for Tamika Banks and Maddy Sansby and a goal each for Grace Shelley and Drew Aiken ensured The Gap were always chasing the game. The defensive line were once again rock solid led by Victoria Holowko. Some amazing direct through balls from Tia Vela ensured the striker’s job was to simply put the ball in the back of the net.

A delightful through ball by Grace Shelley saw Tamika Banks beat her defender down the right and strike the ball past the diving keeper.

A training ground corner move crossed over by Tia Vela was controlled with a first touch by Maddy Sansby and placed in the bottom left corner of the goal past a diving keeper.

A lung busting run by Tia Vela down the left saw a through ball to the waiting Maddy Sansby. A strong body defence by Sansby ensured she made enough space to strike the ball into the corner of the net.

With all players feeling the heat a midfield battle won by Maddy Sansby ensured a wide ball to the flying Tamika Banks was only going to end in on place. Tamika once again beat her defender to hit a venomous shot into the corner of the net. A great move with a great finish.

Perhaps the most outstanding work for the day belonged to each and every girl as each had to dig deep into their reserves towards the end of the game. A warm day and no substitutes were always going to be a challenge and each and every girl rose to that challenge.

Under 16 Boys – Sunshine Coast FC (0) v Western Pride FC (0)

The strongest performance of the year so far from the under 16s resulting in sharing the points with a hard fought 0-0 final scoreline.  In very hot conditions the boys fought hard from the first whistle to the end.

Missing 4 players again through injury and illness we were tested on fitness and heart and came through very well on both. From the captain Leigh Williams in goal through to a hard running Kaelan Debbage up front no player left the tank with any gas in it.

The Western pride were well organised and peppered the Fire goal with a number of attacks, the back four had good structure and hit tackles missed in the previous games.

Outside full backs Levi Gamble and Harrison Bowen, both with pre game injuries battled hard against useful WP attackers, both winning on the day with excellent games. Central defenders Keegan New and Budd Baublys worked well together, both with forward attacking runs creating chances for the Fire.

Hardworking Nathan Thompson worked tirelessly up and down the park with Jordan Meredith, carrying an injured groin who also created chances for the Fire. Jai Coleman, Fletcher Davis, Jaya Wilson and Liam Aughterson all ran hard changing positions frequently as the game wore on.

Late in the first half Fire had chance after a good ball out of defence through to Kaelan Debbage who struck a low drive to the left of the keeper was excellently saved. The Pride hit the cross bar late in the game. Fire were unlucky not to take all the points, a team performance which will give good confidence leading into this weeks game.
