Junior Match Reports – 30 July 2017

Under 12 Boys – Sunshine Coast FC (1) v Brisbane Strikers FC (4)

The third meeting between these two sides this campaign saw a second visit to Kawana for title chasing Brisbane Strikers, Fire though, buoyed by their come from behind win at Brisbane Olympic last week would be looking for another positive performance.

The visitors kicked off in perfect conditions but it was a motivated Fire that took the game to Strikers from the outset, within a minute Riley Moore chasing a through ball that the Strikers keeper had to be smartly off his line to clear, under more pressure the visiting keeper was fortunate when another clearance hit the on rushing Kaidin Dawson. After four minutes Fire had the game’s first clear cut chance when Jett Wouters saw his low curling effort strike the post, Moore first to the rebound sent his strike over the bar. A minute later Wouters again tried his luck, this time the goalkeeper making the save.

On six minutes Strikers managed their first attempt on goal when a fierce drive cannoned off the crossbar.

Fire pressed again, Moore continuing his early good work with a run and cross down the right that found Wouters who couldn’t quite engineer room for a shot, Dawson also thwarted before Strikers cleared.

For all their good work in the opening 10 minutes the opening goal wouldn’t quite come for Fire and they almost found themselves a goal down when Vancam’s clearance hit a Fire defender and looped back over his head and fortunately come back off the post.

Strikers were not being allowed time to play by a very determined Fire team, and after a series of niggley fouls by the visitors Fire earned a free kick that allowed Dré Ngaha the opportunity to shoot in the 14th minute, his free kick was blocked but he followed up to send a drive just over the bar.

Tanner Mathers then went on a great run through the middle of the pitch before being stopped just short of the Strikers area, good vision from Ryan Tappouras intercepting a Strikers pass allowed him to send Beppe Rocco free down the right to cross and again keep pressure on the Strikers defence.

As the half reached the midway point, Fire defensive resilience from Deepal Maharaj, Dawson, Herbie Allsopp and Ngaha, and strong midfield play from Tappouras and Lachlan Noyes kept Strikers opportunities to a minimum, a tame effort going wide after 20 minutes. Fire were almost through again seconds later but Jeremy Byasse was flagged for a contentious offside.

The 21st minute saw Strikers take the lead against the run of play, a long range shot finding its way just inside the post, a second goal two minutes later came following Fire not closing down in their penalty area and a shot through a crowd of players extended the lead. In the 25th minute things got worse for Fire when Strikers added a third with a good finish.

Fire deservedly regained a foothold just on the stroke of half time when another Ngaha free kick put Strikers under pressure, Wouters climbing highest to win a header then slamming the loose ball emphatically into the net.

At the start of the second half Fire switched keepers with Patrick Cooper replacing Vancam in goal.

After a largely uncoordinated opening few minutes, Fire once again began to force the game and dominate territory and possession.

Following a foul on Ngaha in the 36th minute, which earned the Strikers player a yellow card, Ngaha lofted a ball toward the back post which was not adequately cleared and Fire sent a number of quick fire shots towards the Strikers goal, each saved by the keeper, Wouters then breaking clear on the left sent an effort a fraction wide in the 38th minute. Ngaha became the first Fire player to be booked in the 39th minute, for contesting a free kick decision.

There was no let up from Fire who were taking the game to Strikers, the home team tenacious in midfield and playing with energy and drive. Byasse forced a corner in the 40th minute, the 43rd minute saw Vancam surge down the right flank and with composure pull the ball back to Wouters whose deft effort was again stopped by the in-form Strikers keeper.

More Fire pressure in the 45th and 46th minutes saw Wouters, Tapporous and Rocco all have shots on target.

Strikers rarely threatened to trouble the Fire backline and Mathers, having a strong game in the heart of the Fire defence ensured Fire held firm.

On 53 minutes Dawson beat players on the left hand side but again, his shot from a narrow angle was saved, Tapporous also tried his luck in the 56th minute as Fire pushed forward in the pursuit of goals but he too was once more denied by the Strikers keeper.

However it was second placed Strikers who enjoyed the games last highlight when a long high speculative effort into the box was just too high for Cooper and give the visitors a flattering fourth goal of the game.
