I would like to welcome everyone to Round 17 of the NPL QLD Men’s fixtures and Round 13 of the Women’s fixtures. I also extend a welcome to the players and staff from Brisbane Strikers FC and Souths United.

The Women are going up against traditional competition leaders, Souths United. It is a good challenge for the girls who seem to have found their feet despite results.

The Senior Men are suffering through growing pains at the moment but their determination hasn’t diminished. They are once again facing a tough challenge with the second-placed Strikers and they will go out there with the same great attitude they have brought to the last 16 rounds. This season has had a revolving door of young talent helping to show our younger players that playing senior NPL football is an achievable goal.

It’s been an up and down couple of weeks. The team played superbly well against Townsville and were unlucky not to come away with a result after being the better side for much of the encounter. Failure to make the most of chances we created came back to haunt us and while everyone was encouraged by the performance the team was disappointed to not get some points from the match.

Last week against Olympic we played well for the opening 25 minutes and had we taken a glorious opportunity in the first five minutes who knows what might have happened. But the last 20 minutes of the first half Olympics’ class showed through and the punished any mistake we made. The team rallied in the second half and played much better and once again showed that for long periods we can match it with any side.

This week is another tough assignment with the Brisbane Strikers arrival. We welcome back some ex Fire players in Greig Henslee, Sam Knight and Jeremy Stewart who are doing a great job at the Strikers. The team wants to bounce back from last week and is looking forward to taking on one of the best sides in the State. I look forward to seeing you at the game

This weekend we have a very tough and very good footballing side in Souths United. They have some very strong players and I’m sure they will see this game as a must win, however, our results have been better in previous games and we have been really unlucky not to get 6 points in the last two rounds.

This is a good opportunity to shock the competition and go at Souths hard with hopefully a solid performance. It will take for all 11 girls to be on their best game to do this though. Defensively we have been much better but we just need to be more clinical at the other end with the opportunities we do create. This will be a great game so hopefully everyone will come and support us and give us that extra push!
