Sunshine Coast FC has continued to bolster its ranks this week with the addition of former Wellington Phoenix star Alex Smith to the squad as a midfielder and assistant coach for the PlayStation 4 NPL Queensland 2018 season.
“Alex will bring some much-needed variety and experience to the midfield,” said Sunshine Coast FC Managing Director Noel Woodall.
“His experience playing overseas and in the A-League will be invaluable to the club throughout next year,” said Woodall.
The 32-year-old has a diverse resume having grown up in the United States, he spent a year with first-tier Major League Soccer club FC Dallas for the 2005-06 season.
After a five year hiatus, Smith took the field for NSW Super League club Fraser Park in 2010 and moved to NSW Premier League club Sydney Olympic in 2011, leading to a Premiership/Championship season.
The midfielder was signed by Wellington Phoenix in 2012, making 35 appearances in his two years with the A-League outfit before moving on the NPL Queensland club FNQ FC Heat.
Most recently, Smith completed a two year stretch in Malaysia, playing in the second-tier Malaysian Premier League for NS Matrix F.C in 2016 and Johor Darul Ta’zim II F.C. in 2017.
Smith hopes to bring his international and A-League experience to improve the local talent on the Sunshine Coast and the NPL.
